TUESDAY, OCTOBER 14, 2008: Our tour to Cleveland, MS, in the “Heart of the Delta” begins this morning! We depart from Collierville United Methodist Church at 7:00am, and from the Target store, 601 Colonial at Spotswood in the Audubon Woods Shopping Center at 7:45am. We’ll travel through the Mississippi Delta to the town of Cleveland, MS, the county seat of Bolivar County. Our first stop this morning is the McCarty’s Pottery, home of Merigold, pottery fashioned from Mississippi mud. A short walk through a bamboo tunnel in the artist’s backyard reveals a flourishing maze of gardens, overgrown with rare herbs and indigenous plants and trees. Our next stop is the King Railroad Museum for a shorttour. Lunch is included at the Lunchroom, famous for its Boar’s Head sandwiches and is located in the Warehouse. After our meal, we have arranged a campus tour of Delta State University including the Boo Ferris Museum. Boo Farris was later a Mississippi State Baseball Hall of Fame member who went on to a great baseball career with the Boston Red Sox. Our final stop this afternoon is the Dockery Farms, founded in 1895, for a heritage tour of this unique influence in the Blues movement. We depart for home in the early afternoon and return to the Target Store about 6:15pm and to Collierville Church about 7:00pm with many fond memories of our day in Cleveland, MS.
